The Fantastic Beasts series has resumed production for their third movie. But, the Fantastic Beasts saga has been engulfed in much contravisory. The third movie was set to start filming on March 16th, 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They officially resumed production on September 20th, 2020 and have postponed the release date to July 15th, 2022. The first movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, was successful and received many positive reviews. But, the second movie, Fantastic Beast: The Crimes of Grindelwald, started a spirling series of controversy surrounding the saga. This movie received much backlash from its audience for attempting to fix many plot holes from its predecessor while simultaneously adding news ones. This film left much of its audience disappointed and in fear the franchise will not recover.

Johnny Deep as Gellert Grindelwald In Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

But, aside from the writing, backlash continued when Johnny Deep was cast in 2016 amongst the controversy surrounding his divorce from Amber Heard. Immediately following the divorce, Heard obtained a restraining order against Deep and claimed he was abusive throughout their relationship. But, audio recording was later realized that pointed to Heard being abusive towards Deep. Amongst the legal battle, J.K. Rowling and David Yates defended the casting choice of Johnny Deep. But, following a U.K. court ruling where Johnny Deep lost in a libel case against The Sun who made claims he was a “wife-beater”, Warner Bros. decided to part ways with the actor for the third Fantastic Beasts film. Johnny Deep made an Instagram post on November 6th announcing his departure. The controversy surrounding Deep has shifted many people’s opinion of the film and could greatly affect the success of the third movie. The Johnny Deep controversy is not all that the Fantastic Beast saga has faced.

Ezra Miller's altercation with a female fan outside a pub in Iceland.

Actor, Ezra Miller, who plays Credence Barebone, faced backlash after a video of him choking a woman went viral. The video was taken outside of a bar where apparently Ezra and a woman were talking and she was jokingly asking Ezra if he wanted to fight, but he took it too literally. In the video, Ezra can be seen grabbing the woman around the neck and pushing her against the object behind her then bringing her to the ground. Ezra and his team have been quietly dealing with the incident and he is still set to appear in Fantastic Beasts 3. But, the controversy does not stop here. The author of the Harry Potter books and the writer for the second and third Fantastic Beasts films, J.K. Rowling has faced backlash for her anti-trans comments. In 2018, Rowling liked a tweet that stated trans women are just men in dresses. This was then claimed to be an accident by Rowling. Since then, more tweets have surfaced causing Rowling to receive backlash and accused of being anti-trans. When will the controversy end for the Fantastic Beasts saga? And will they be able to recover? Looks like we will just have to wait and see.
